MAMMOGRAPHY

The mammography examination unit at DiagnoseZentrumUrania was awarded the Quality Certificate for Breast Diagnosis by the ÖRG (Austrian Radiological Society) and BURA (Bundesfachgruppe Radiologie der österreichischen Ärztekammer).

Women should undergo a basic mammography from their early/mid thirties onward. Regular checkups should be performed every one-and-a-half to two years. Your treating doctor will then decide whether the intervals between checkups should be shortened or remain the same. Only regular checkups help identify breast cancer at an early stage.

DiagnoseZentrumUrania is the first diagnostic center in Austria to use an innovative imaging procedure known as microdose mammography. The radiation dose needed for microdose mammography is up to 60 percent less than that used in conventional X-ray mammography.

No other mammography scanner offers this benefit. Detailed, high-resolution views of female breast tissue can be obtained with microdose mammography, leading to enhanced overall image quality. This is of special significance for the evaluation of large and dense breasts, which have been very difficult to examine until now.

• Prevention
• Knots in the breast
• Hardening in the breast
• Palpable lymph nodes in the armpit
• Risk of breast cancer (e.g. if the disease is known to exist within the family)

The Examination:

To obtain optimal images at the lowest possible radiation dose the breast has to be compressed briefly, which may be a little unpleasant. However, the better the breast is compressed, the more informative are the X-ray images. As the compression is generally least unpleasant during and after the end of menstruation, we try our best to perform the examinations at these times.

Important information

PLEASE DO NOT FORGET: Kindly bring along any prior mammograms when you come for your examination. Small changes are often identified only during follow-up check-ups.

Double reporting by two independent specialists at DZU ensures the reliability of the diagnosis. Furthermore, DZU has a special computer program (CAD-Computer-Assisted Diagnosis), which aids the doctor in identifying pathological changes in the mammography images.
